Welcome to our Salome High School website: (www.salomehs.org.) The Governing Board, superintendent, teachers, and support staff are happy to report our 2007 – 2008 “academic success” as measured by the federal government program NCLB, (No Child Left Behind): We achieved AYP; (Adequate Yearly Progress), based on our students graduation rate and their ability to pass the Arizona AIMS Test, (AZ Instrument to Measure Standards) in Writing, Reading and Math. Additionally, our students were academically successful in meeting the AZ Department of Education state program; AZ LEARNS, we achieved a rating of Performing Plus. (This success is based our upon students outstanding scores on the AIMS Test results the number of students passing the AIMS Test, our Graduation Rate, Dropout Rate, Number of students fluent in English based on the AZELLA Test, and meeting the federal standards for making AYP.) You as students, parents and community should be very proud of this level of achievement last year. Of course this level of success would not have happened had the teachers and entire staff not worked diligently this past year to do “whatever it takes to make sure our students were successful.” The Governing Board is very proud of our teachers and staff working together as a team to create success for our students, school and community.
In order to repeat our success this year we have provided seniors this year who have not passed the AIMS Test an intervention training program to better prepare them for the AIMS Testing. This is done in late October before the AIMS Test and in early February when every student takes all or part of the AIMS Test. Remember seniors have to pass the AIMS Test to graduate. Additionally, we will implement mandatory tutoring programs for ALL STUDENTS that are making D’s & F’s. Any student, regardless of their grade, can participate in the program to improve their grades. The tutoring program will begin November 4 and end December 11. This is a four day a week program Monday through Thursday. The tutoring begins at 3:30 pm and ends approximately at 5:00 pm. Students who participate in this program may ride the athletic bus home. Students are provided additional learning time with teachers and the fact that students are rewarded with a 3:25 pm release when they have improved their grades enough to be released from the program. Of course if the student’s grade drops the student will be placed back in the tutoring program.
We are in the process of planning for a Summer School program at Salome High School beginning June 1 and ending June 25. It will run four days per week from 8:00 am - 12:00 noon. We may also have a summer school program in Quartzsite. More details will be available next semester. Seniors who are interested in our AZ Western College, (AWC) “dual credit program” can earn credit in college English and/or Math. Seniors must have their application completed, have taken the entrance exam in December and pay the reduced $123.00 college fee per class. They may take one or both classes based on their second semester schedules. Now is the time for seniors to apply for scholarships. Remember the “early bird always gets the worm”! Don’t put it off one more day.
Great news today! The Elks Lodge in Wickenburg donated to SHS Webster Dictionaries to every student and teacher as well as a Webster Thesaurus for every classroom. Their gift will assist every student at our school in the learning process. This week was Honors Award Week to recognize our 46 students who made the Honor Roll at Gold 4.0 -3.75, Silver 3.74 -3.50 or Bronze 3.49 – 3.00, and 26 Perfect Attendance students, and Students of the Month for July, Aug. and Sept. Their names are on our website.
We need your help! Please consider joining our school Advisory Council. The next meeting is December 11. The meeting begins a 6:00 pm and ends at 7:30 pm or earlier based on the agenda. Advisory Council is about you discussing your thoughts, ideas, and concerns about “how we together create a better school for ALL students and ALL school programs.” We need a lot of parent involvement in our school. If you live too far to come perhaps we can discuss technology services that might work for you. Please call the school with your support 1-928-859- 4661 or 3453. Together we can soar to new levels of success for ALL students!
Sincerely,
Ron Gardner, Superintendent
