ARIZONA TRI-UNIVERSITY ADMISSION STANDARDS

FIRST YEAR/TRANSFER STUDENT

STUDENTS MUST MEET BOTH THE APTITUDE AND ACADEMIC COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS TO BE ADMISSIBLE TO THE ARIZONA TRI-UNIVERSITY SYSTEM.  (Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, University of Arizona)
Home schooled students and graduates from non-accredited public, private or charter schools must meet the Arizona Board of Regents' general test score (ACT or SAT) and basic competency requirements.

APTITUDE REQUIREMENTS

Aptitude for first year applicants may be demonstrated by CLASS RANK OR COMPOSITE SCORE (ACT/SAT) OR GPA IN CORE COURSES.
Aptitude for transfer applicants may be demonstrated by TRANSFERABLE SEMESTER HOURS AND GPA.

  1. All FIRST YEAR students who carry a Core GPA from 2.50 to 2.99 or who rank in the top 26 - 50% of the graduating high school class and have no more than one deficiency in any two subjects in the coursework requirements are admitted with conditions. Students admitted with conditions may be required to participate in academic assistance programs.
       
  2. All TRANSFER students with less than 24 transferable hours must meet the aptitude requirements for FIRST YEAR students.

One unit in at least three of the four areas (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science) is recommended. An advanced level, e.g. advanced placement (AP) or honors course in a lab science completed previously can be used for a third unit. (Integrated Lab Science may be used to substitute for one required course.)

** Three transferable 4-credit lab science courses from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (including one semester each from three of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science - an Integrated Lab Science or advanced level lab science may be substituted for one required course).

TEST SCORES MAY BE USED TO SATISFY ONLY ONE LAB SCIENCE UNIT

SOCIAL SCIENCE
2 units

One unit of American History and one additional unit of any combination of 2 semesters of social science such as: European/World History, Economics, Sociology, Geography, Government, Psychology, Anthropology, or Philosophy

FOREIGN LANGUAGE
2 units

Two units of same foreign language

Foreign Language Test Scores: AP 3; CLEP 50 or better; IB 4 or better; and SAT II must place on the 50 percentile or better.

* Two transferable 3-credit courses in the same foreign language from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.

FINE ARTS
1 unit 

One unit of fine arts or any combination of 2 semesters of fine arts

*ENGLISH 
4 YEARS/UNITS
NOTE: English courses taken must include literature and substantial emphasis on grammar and composition. Courses such as journalism, business communications, speech and any others not devoted exclusively to the study of English may not be substituted for an English course.
*MATHEMATICS 
4 YEARS/UNITS
Algebra I, geometry, algebra II, and any advanced math course for which algebra II is a prerequisite, e.g. pre-calculus, calculus, analytical geometry. (It is strongly recommended that students take mathematics during their senior year of high school.)
*LABORATORY SCIENCE (BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, EARTH SCIENCE)
3 YEARS/UNITS
One unit in at least three of the four areas is recommended, although an advanced level, e.g. advanced placement (AP) or honors course in a lab science completed previously can be used for a third unit. (A laboratory based integrated science course may be used to substitute for one of the three required courses)
*SOCIAL SCIENCE 
2 YEARS/UNITS
One unit of American History and one unit of any combination of two semesters of additional social science such as geography, government, psychology, anthropology, European or world history, economics, sociology, or philosophy.
*FOREIGN LANGUAGE 
2 YEARS/UNITS
Two units of the same foreign language; a third year is recommended. American sign language may be used to fulfill this requirement.
*FINE ARTS 
1 YEAR/UNIT
One unit in fine arts or any combination of two semesters of fine art courses. Fine Arts are defined as those that provide the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in production and performance; analysis, interpretation and evaluation; and historical and cultural aspects of the visual and performing arts. Courses must combine theory and practice and include critical thinking skills.


*ART

Introduction to art, art appreciation, art history, art therapy, art design (three dimensional), drawing, painting, ceramics, sculptures, studio art, life drawing, printmaking, museum studies, photography, art production, art careers and gallery management, graphic design, jewelry.

*DANCE

Ballet, modern dance, dance performance, dance history, choreography and production, jazz dance, ethnic dance, dance improvisation.

*MUSIC

Music appreciation, music history, band (beginning, intermediate, advanced, marching), jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble, orchestra, choir (beginning, intermediate, advanced, concert), voice, music theory/harmony, instrument training (guitar, strings, winds, piano), glee club, vocal ensemble, music laboratory.

*THEATRE/DRAMA

Drama, acting, directing, theatre arts, history of theatre, dramatic productions, stagecraft, costume design, and other technical theatre classes.

COURSE APPLICABILITY TO COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS WILL BE CONSIDERED ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS.
